Society of Environmental Journalists
This US-based international organization of environmental journalists publishes a selection of new and outstanding stories on environmental topics in print and on the air, updated every weekday.

The Daily Climate

This is a publication of Environmental Health Sciences, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to driving science into public discussion and policy on environmental health issues, including climate change. It provides a good scan of current environment issues.


Environmental News Network
The Environmental News Network (ENN), founded in 1992, is one of the oldest sources of online environmental news on the web.

Yale 360
Yale Environment 360 is an online magazine offering opinion, analysis, reporting and debate on global environmental issues, including a daily digest of major environmental news.

The Guardian-environment
The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom has an excellent roundup of environment and sustainability stories.

On Sustainability
This is a knowledge community that uses conferences, a weblog, peer reviewed journals and book imprint to exchange ideas on environmental, cultural, economic and social concerns.

Canadian governments

Environment and Climate Change Canada
The main Canadian government department responsible for reporting on the state of the environment and for regulating certain environmental activities that are a federal responsibility.

Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development
The commissioner provides parliamentarians with objective, independent analysis and recommendations on the federal government’s efforts to protect the environment and foster sustainable development.

United Nations
UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs
This department deals with a broad range of sustainability issues. It maintains documents from the 1992 Earth Summit, including the text of Agenda 21, on-line. The Sustainable Development site is:


United Nations Environment Programme
The principal UN organization responsible for collecting and disseminating information about the global environment. It has helped negotiate a number of global environmental agreements.

United Nations Development Programme
The world’s largest multilateral source of grant technical assistance for sustainable human development. It co-ordinates UN human development activities. It includes the Human Development Report, an annual assessment of the state of human development globally.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Has a global mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living and to improve agricultural productivity. This UN agency has information on global agriculture, fishery and forest issues.

OECD Better Life Index
This index goes beyond economic statistics to report on 11 topics the OECD has identified as essential, in the areas of material living conditions and quality of life.

Non-government organizations

Asahi Glass Foundation
This Japanese foundation does an annual survey of global environmental issues, gives the Blue Planet Prize for solutions to global environmental problems and publishes reports on environment and sustainability.

Canadian Index of Wellbeing Network
This composite index tracks Canada’s progress using indicators in a series of fields to show whether Canadians are better or worse off.

Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES)
A national network of investors, environmental organizations and other public interest groups working with companies and investors to address sustainability challenges such as global climate change.

Conference Board of Canada
Publishes reports on sustainability in Canada.


Happy Planet Index
The index shows the extent to which countries across the globe produce long, happy and sustainable lives for their people. The index ranks countries based on their efficiency, and how many long and happy lives each produces per unit of environmental output.

Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments as well as national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development.

International Institute for Sustainable Development
The IISD is a is a Canadian-based not-for-profit organization promoting change towards sustainable development. It deals with decision-makers in government, business, NGOs and other sectors in the development and implementation of policies that are simultaneously beneficial to the global economy, the global environment and to social well-being.

The Natural Step
This group helps organizations make strategic decisions to move toward sustainability. It provides a framework for decision-making, including the meeting of four system conditions for sustainability.

People and Planet Canada
A gateway to environment, sustainability and conservation, across Canada and beyond. Includes green events calendar, green job and volunteer listings, and thematic green gateways on a range of issues.

Pollution Probe
A long-established environmental organization that defines environmental problems through research, promotes understanding through education and presses for practical solutions through advocacy.

Smart Prosperity Institute
This nation-wide research and policy network is based at Canada’s University of Ottawa. It brings together business, policy and academic leaders to help innovative ideas advance policy development. The organization focuses on market-based approaches to build a greener, more competitive economy. It brings public and private sector decision-makers to the table with expert researchers to both design and apply innovative policies and programs.

This very nice site is a guide to renewable energy for children, but is useful for people of all ages. It goes from the history of electricity generation through how solar energy works to how to install solar panels.

World Resources Institute
Produces a wide range of information, including the World Resources Report, a compendium of global environment and development statistics, in collaboration with UN agencies.

World Wildlife Fund
This global organization has a handle on environmental issues around the planet.

Business, economics and sustainability

Canadian Business for Social Responsibility
A non-profit, member-led organization that mobilizes Canadian companies for corporate social responsibility.

Corporate Knights – The Canadian Magazine for Responsible Business
This is both an online and printed magazine that tracks successes and challenges of corporate leadership and innovation.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development
This is a CEO-led, global association of some 200 companies dealing exclusively with business and sustainable development.
